Chapter Four

She fast, small, and his daughter.

It was hard for him to be objective about fighting the body that housed an evil spirit, seeing the body belonged to his sweet Esther. Two quick and successive blows to the shin changed his mind. If he didn’t fight back, it would get the better of him and escape. The whole beating would have been pointless. But how does one fight his own daughter, his own eight-year-old daughter? The answer he came up with was as dumb as it was true at the moment. You fight her for love.

She was charging at him again, her eyes blue, shiny, and blank with intent. He braced himself. She had the strength of an adult but the body of a child. If he charged back too hard, he might hurt her, or even break a bone or two. He had to be smart about it. She had all the advantage, she was fast, small, and she had his love.

She knew the man who was this body’s father was holding back, scared of hurting his daughter. Foolish thing that would be the end of him and his daughter. The two blows she had given to his shin had done little to weaken him. He was looking at her differently with a new concentration etched on his face. She seized the advantage and dashed for the corridor. All she needed to do was get the keys by the rusted nail, open the big main door by the living room, and run out of the house to her freedom.

Priscilla was just in front of her. She had a reinforced steel frying pan in her hands, there were tears in her eyes, and her hands were shaking a little. But she gathered enough courage and swiped the pan in front of her. By some luck and because it had forgotten totally about the woman, she hit her daughter square in the face. The head snapped back from the impact, the kitchen echoed the noise as if in disgust at the act the mother just committed, but her possessed daughter didn’t fall. Her face twitched. Her nose dripping blood in a steady stream, she faced Priscilla and sneered a little. Hate was written in red ink of pain and venom on her face.

Priscilla backed away from what she saw in that face. The pan dropped from her hand and clattered, which then brought a smile to the small face of the girl. For something
